National Poison Prevention Week was endorsed by the United States congress in 1961 and was designated to take place annually, during the third full week of March. In the early 1980s, Poison Centres across Canada also began to promote Poison Prevention Week during this same week. Canadian poison centres continue to promote Poison Prevention Week through a variety of activities. Each year, they work closely with media representatives, as well as community partners such as Safe Kids Canada and Health Canada to promote poison safety messages. The infectious disease can be found in every continent, but predominantly affects people living in poorer conditions, including across Canada. This year will be the 6th annual Green Shirt Day and the 6th anniversary of Logan Boulet's death following the tragic Humboldt bus crash in 2018. Logan donated 6 organs saving 6 lives, and tissue, enhancing the lives of many more. In the wake of this catastrophe, thousands of Canadians registered their consent to be organ and tissue donors which greatly increased provincial organ registries all across Canada. This became known as the "Logan Boulet Effect". Logan's parents created Green Shirt Day to honour Logan and to continue encouraging Canadians to register their consent to be organ and tissue donors.
